FIELD NOTE 11 / Keep knowledge / Before trouble
Back up civilization before the password expires
Build a small, usable knowledge bank with paper, local files, provenance, and someone who can explain the index.
Your objective
Make a practical reference collection that can be used without a cloud account or its original curator.
Gather these
- Printed priority references
- Local storage device and a second copy
- A simple reader device
- Index notebook
- Permission and source records
The procedure
Choose for a task
Start with local contacts, hazard plans, maps, water and hygiene references, equipment manuals, growing calendars, and teaching materials. Ask what action each item supports. Ten documents that people understand can be more useful than a vast unindexed download.
Record provenance
For each item, record title, author or institution, version, source URL, date checked, region, and permission to copy. Mark summaries as summaries. Keep uncertain or obsolete advice visibly separate and retain correction notes with affected copies.
Make independent copies
Keep multiple copies and store one in a separate place. Where practical, use different storage media so one failure does not erase everything. Local files and printed pages reduce reliance on an online account; paper still needs protection from water, fire, and loss.
Test actual access
Save this edition with the download link, open the saved file, and then test it with networking disabled. Use its contents links and browser Find. Source links remain online references. Check other files on a spare device and confirm that no login or missing reader blocks them.
Train the next curator
Keep an index organized by need, with a record of what each copy contains and where it is stored. Ask a second person to find a reference and explain its limits. Schedule periodic readability checks and transfer files to working media as equipment ages.
Stop and get help when…
- Keep passwords, identity records, private care details, and sensitive addresses out of a public knowledge bank.
- A checksum can detect a changed file; it cannot prove that advice is correct or the publisher is trustworthy.
A small, safe practice run
Save the offline edition, disconnect networking, and ask another person to find the safe-water guide. Record the time, obstacle, and correction.
Your field worksheet
Copy these prompts onto paper. Keep personal information private.

Sources and limits
Sources checked . The sources support the safety and reference facts; the worksheet and drill are Oikos planning suggestions.
Regional examples need local adaptation. For specialized treatment, building work, waste systems, or food processing, use qualified help and complete technical references.
